The origin of the morpheme “meta” is Greek, and carries a connotation  of change, as in a “change in place, order, or nature”. In common, popular parlance, it is more often used in the context of “beyond or higher level”, often implied through phrases like “thinking outside the box” or in storytelling devices where the nature of the story itself is analyzed.
