The Latin/Greek term tekhnologia was used in reference to a “systematic treatment of an art, craft, or technique”. In modern terms, it denotes the study of “mechanical and industrial arts”. It is often considered to be effectively “applied science”, which while true in some aspects, mischaracterizes it as purely subordinate to the structured discipline of institutional science. Much invention, while often building upon its relatively contemporary scientific understanding, isn’t quite so predictable and structured, and often ends up contributing to the corpus of scientific knowledge. In other words, it represents a bi-directional process of promoting the evolution of our knowledge and ability to manipulate the natural world in order to achieve beneficial ends.
